Pseudodoxia Epidemica or Enquiries Into Very Many Received Tenents and Commonly Presumed Truths Classic Reprint Thomas Brown 9781333600976 Books Reviews
Delighted as I was to find this rare volume, which, among Thomas Browne's works, is usually presented abridged, in a complete facsimile of the last edition Sir Thomas himself corrected, I was utterly bewildered to find the production values so poor that it is hard to believe anyone actually supervised the project. Briefly and simply the even-numbered pages are clear and legible, as if someone had activated a "high-contrast" option in the scanner; but the odd-numbered pages are photographed in a dark mode, such that the type is barely legible on the dark page. I find it possible to read the odd-numbered pages, although the eye-strain, combined with the difficulties of Browne's Latinate prose and 17th-Century orthography and type-styles, made me dread them. What were the publishers of this edition thinking? Were they striving for a metaphor of the 17th Century's black-white view of Christian morality?
Do over. Please! Or at least contribute a preface to explain what the production values are striving for, and convince us you're not a 'bot that doesn't have a production supervisor.
