The saga of Doctor R. Hickman begins with this book, “The Last Glowing Ember.” This story leaves the generals and heroes upon the pedestals where history, with its tweaks and polish, has placed them. Doc, a Tennessee farm boy with problems common to every man, faces adulthood far too soon. In this novel, the young man struggles with his faith in God, separation from family and the girl he left behind, his ability to kill his fellowman, and his own survival.
Raised in an idyllic rural setting, Doc was ill-equipped to handle the dramatic events that the Civil War placed before him. The patriotic fervor ran hot as newly recruited farm boys in uniform were adored by swooning ladies. At training camp, worldly excesses abounded, tempting “good Christian boys” to wade into the pleasures of sin. The barbaric carnage of the first days of battle sickened the hardest of hearts. All of these things worked together seeking to put out the flame of godliness, decency, and human kindness that had been instilled into these young men. After a thousand days of War, that flame in Doc Hickman’s heart was reduced to the last glowing ember.

This book is surprisingly captivating. It is a story of youth, and growing into maturity. It captivates innocence , and the temptations of youth. It captivates the horrors of war, and the toll it takes on its soldiers! I think any one who enjoyed the Walton's , or little house on the prairie, will enjoy this book. Gray's description of the events really put you in the story! Very thought provoking. Looking forward to reading the next book.
This was an enjoyable book.
I liked how the stories related to the bible verses in the beginning of each chapter.
I continued to read the second ediition "Renkindle the Flame" which told the story of the main characters but I would have liked to read more on all who were in the book.Maybe that will happen in future books.
